CHISAGO LAKES FOOTBALL
TEAM + ATTITUDE + EFFORT = SUCCESS
PROGRAM GOAL:
1. PLAY TO WIN
Definition: It is an attitude to do the right things at the right time on and off the field. It is not what you do that determines if you are successful, it is how you do what you do that determines your success. Football players who play to win see the following:
* teammates as friends, not competition
* coaches as teachers to make you better, not an enemy
* practice as an opportunity approached with aggression, passion, and investments that will get a return (success), not as spending / wasting time
ACTIONS TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL:
1. HAVE FUN: BIG GAMES / FRIDAY NIGHTS
2. CHOOSING THE RIGHT: ATTITUDE / EFFORT / AGGRESSION LEVEL
3. DISCIPLINE / DO THE LITTLE THINGS RIGHT
TEAM: Football is the ultimate team game that depends on people who are unselfish and believe in synergy (a force created when the combined sum of the parts is greater than their individual sum) Every decision that is made will be based on the good of the team rather than the wishes of individuals. It is amazing how much can be accomplished when nobody cares who gets the credit.
ATTITUDE: (PMA) The attitude each player has is a choice that he makes everyday. Carnegie Institute study: 85% of success in anything is due to attitudes and abilities to deal with other people,15% of success is due to technical skills and knowledge. ATTITUDE is the single most important element of success. This phase of our program is more important than anything else.
EFFORT: The amount of effort each player exerts is also a choice and it is not limited to talent level. Football is a game that demands an all out effort and proper fundamentals all the time. As a team and as individuals we must look at the man in the mirror and ask this question: AM I DOING MY BEST?
RULES / EXPECTATIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES
1. ACT LIKE A CHAMPION
Football players must know that we represent more than ourselves. We represent the entire team, school and community and therefore we are accountable for our actions at all times. Any action that is detrimental to you is also detrimental to our football team. We expect a
A. ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITY
The reason you are in school is because of academics. The difference in where you are now and where you want to go is your education.
1. Eligibility: if you are not eligible, you cannot help the team
2. Be on time for class
3.. It is easier to keep up with schoolwork than it is to catch up on schoolwork. You need to do your schoolwork everyday.
B. MSHSL POLICY:
Minnesota State High School League Policy will be enforced at all times during
the season and during the off-season. Policies are included in the State High
School League brochure. A player who is serving a penalty practices with the
team but does not participate in any games until the penalty time is over.
Consequences not related to MSHSL policies will be dealt with on a one
on one basis.
C. ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Regular attendance at football practice and games is essential if you are to learn the skills and strategies that make you and the team successful. Missing practice jeopardizes our success, lets the team down, and reflects a lack of commitment to our goals. If you are not going to be at practice you must contact YOUR Coach. (this includes absences during the school day)
9th: Coach McNally 213-2562
10th: Coach Anderson: 213-2538
Varsity: Coach Weiss: 213-2566
D. MEETING EXPECTATIONS:
1. Be prompt (prompt means that being early is being on time)
2. Purpose of meetings: to learn from them / this eliminates mistakes on the field
3. Be prepared: bring a pen or pencil and your playbook
4. Discipline: you are responsible to concentrate on the meeting the entire time you are there. There is no such thing as a dumb question. Asking a dumb question is better than correcting a dumb mistake. There are no excuses for not knowing the material when the meeting is over.
E. PRACTICE EXPECTATIONS
1. Be prompt (prompt means that being early is being on time)
2. Purpose of practice: Rep fundamental skills into muscle memory (auto pilot) / eliminates mistakes on the field
3.Out Practiceour opponents / Invest your time: time is the only variable that is equal in
every program. We will invest our practice time expecting a greater return on Game Day.
4. Discipline: you are responsible to work hard and work smart during practice: It can be that a player is busting his tail, but if he does not know his assignments or what he is doing he cannot play.
9th / 10th / JV: Everyone who commits will play. Playing time may not be exactly equal for all players.
Varsity: Playing time based on attitude and ability. Efforts are made to play as many players as possible but there are no guarantees.
G. LOCKER ROOM EXPECTATIONS
1. No cleats will be worn in the locker room except on game day
2. All garbage will be properly thrown away
3. All clothing / pads / shoes / etc. will be stored and locked in your locker
H. HEALTH & NUTRITION
1. SLEEP: You need a certain amount of sleep (8-9 hours) to be at your peak performance. Not enough sleep results in a loss of energy, loss of mental sharpness and you become more likely to make mistakes in judgment. The only time the brain produces certain chemicals that the body needs to stay in balance is when you are sleeping.
2. WATER: Most experts agree that 8-10 eight ounce glasses of water a day are mandatory for optimum health. The dehydration process has already started by the time that you realize that you are thirsty,. The drinking of fluids during the week and the night before the game is very important.
3. DIET: Dr. Forest Tennant recommends that you should eat a balanced diet, but that you should also consume much more protein than the average person. Foods like lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, and dry beans are rich in protein.
4. PRE GAME MEALS: Pre-game: A good pre-game meal consists of carbohydrates and should be consumed 3 to 4 hours before game time. Avoid proteins and sugars, as they are hard to digest. Pancakes, pasta, and breads are examples of good pre game foods.
Game Week: A good diet and plenty of rest are essential. The meal consumed
the night before the game is also very important.
5. AVOID THE POISONS: Research from countless sources validates that alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs are health, relationship, and career killers. Realizing your potential is impossible when you are using alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs.
I. GUIDELINES FOR INJURIES & INJURED PLAYERS
If you are injured you are expected to:
1. Meet with Athletic trainer / BJ Jaquette and Coach Weiss on a daily basis.
2. Attend practice / stay mentally sharp / assist managers / water bottles.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HURT AND AN INJURY
The only day you will not be hurting is the first day. From that day on until the end of the season, you may have aches and pains. If you have an injury, you need to get it taken care of. If you have an ache (a hurt) you need to learn to play with it, it is part of the game.
TRAINING ROOM USE
If you need to use the training room before practice, you must be there 30 minutes before practice begins.
J. LETTERING POLICY
To earn a letter in football a player must earn 20 points. Points can be earned by doing the following:
A player who does anything that is detrimental to the
The head coach will use discretion to award or withhold a letter to any player
SPECIAL LETTERING SITUATIONS
1. A letter will be awarded a senior who has been a faithful squad member for two (2) years but has not met the requirements for a letter.
2. A player who is injured will be awarded a letter if he would have accumulated 20 or more quarters if the injury had not occurred. The injured player must attend all practices and games unless excused by the coaching staff.
3. A letter will be awarded to every player who is a member of a state tournament team.
K. OUTSIDE COMMENTS: FAMILY / FRIENDS / TEACHERS / NEWS MEDIA:
1. Anytime you receive recognition it is because others around you gave you the opportunity
2. When talking about our team: be positive, optimistic, and humble.
3. When talking about another team: be tight-lipped, humble, and praise your opponent
4. When relating to the news media, in addition to the above: act like youve been in this
position before.
